This is a part-time, level 6 short course delivered on our Bangor and Wrexham campus, with some content accessed online (blended learning method)
Who is this course for?
This course has been designed specifically for NMC registered nurses, midwives or Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (SCPH)
Why study this course?
This short course will prepare students to respond to the individual needs of patients, in relation to reproductive health and/or sexual/emotional health in a nonjudgmental, non-sexist, non-racist and non-homophobic way.
The aims of this level 6 short course will be to:
- increase knowledge and understanding of different methods of contraception and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
- provide learners with the theory and practice to prepare them to provide contraceptive and sexual health services to clients.
- take a wider view of the health of this population by including some aspects of health promotion which are integral to an integrated contraceptive and sexual health service.
How long does this course take to complete?
This part-time short course runs over 26 weeks, usually during semester 2 of the academic year, and will consist of:
- 4 consecutive days of face-to-face interactive lectures, in the classroom or online.
- 1 day of self-directed study.
- 7 hours of flexible but compulsory engagement in an on-line discussion board throughout the module.
- Attendance at 12 x 3 hour clinics (close to geographical area of normal practice).
- Learners will be required to undertake further reading and assignment preparation.
Assessments on this short course will include: 
- Essay (2,000 words). 
- Reflective journal
- Completing a clinical competency workbook. 
Tutor
Julie Roberts
Julie Roberts qualified as a midwife in 2010 and worked for a number of years in clinical practice rotating between antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care provision.
Julie has always worked closely with the midwifery education department, initially as a Practice Facilitator to support students’ learning experiences before commencing the role of midwifery lecturer in 2017, and becoming Year 1 and Module Lead.
Julie is currently Course Director for the Undergraduate programme, and her interests lie in narrative pedagogy and concept-based learning in midwifery education.
Course Content
What will you study on this course?
This short course (level 6) is designed to provide learners with the theory and practice to provide effective contraceptive and sexual health services to patients.
Module Content will include but is not limited to:
- Professionalism, communication & confidentiality, informed choice
- Anatomy & Physiology (Male & Female reproductive systems, physiology of menstrual cycle)
- Methods of contraception (Hormonal & Non-Hormonal, natural)
- Sexual Health education & health promotion
- Psychosexual counselling
- History taking & risk assessment (pregnancy & sexually transmitted diseases)
- Legal & Ethical implications
- Screening & vaccination programmes in SRH
- Trauma informed care
- Multidisciplinary teamworking and referral
- Working with young people and vulnerable groups
- Equality and diversity in relation to sexual health consultations
What will attendees get out of the course?
By the end of this short course, learners will be able to:
- critically analyse the roles and responsibilities of practitioners in a multidisciplinary team which provides contraceptive and sexual health services.
- critically evaluate the principles and techniques of contraception and demonstrate the clinical skills required to meet client’s needs.
- critically evaluate the theory supporting the provision of contraception and associated health services.
- critically evaluate the complex ethical and legal issues that may arise in the provision of contraceptive and sexual health services.

After creating an account, you will see a homepage with several tabs:

When a section is complete, a ‘tick’ symbol will appear below it.
- Click on ‘Non-graduating applications / Stand alone Modules’, then select ‘Non-graduating Undergraduate’.
- In the next section, select Non-Graduating Taught Modules in Health(NGU/HS) Click Save and Continue.
- On the next page, the default for the first question is Full Time. You need to change this to ‘Part time’:
- You now need to input the module code. Contraception and Associated Health: the code is NHS:3103. This section must be completed for your application to be processed.
- You also need to state the start date. Please make your selection, then click ‘Save and Continue’.
- IMPORTANT: You do not need to write a personal statement to apply for this course. Instead, please upload the document including employment, experience and education information that you have created prior to starting the application that contains the name of your current employer, the number of years of experience you have, and your highest qualification to date. Click Save and continue.
You only need to enter the details of your highest qualification to date, e.g. if you have a postgraduate qualification, please only only include this.
You will be asked for evidence of the qualification. Please either upload a copy of your qualification if it's easily accessible, or upload the Word document again (that you prepared earlier).
Please scroll to the bottom of the page and click on ‘I have no employment history’ (as you have already provided this in your Word document).
